International Circulation:   Could you talk about some of the complications that are associated with TAVI?

Prof. Greg W. Stone:  Complications have most commonly been vascular complications， everything from bleeding， infection， iliac artery avulsion or perforation.  Just because of the size of the devices the complications that could occur include arrhythmias like bradycardia or heart block.  Especially with the core valve device it has been more common to require permanent pacemakers.  Stroke can occur， as well as myocardial infarction， and coronary artery compression， embolization， or closure.  The valve can occasionally embolize and have to be extracted， either surgically or percutaneously， or have to be implanted into the aorta.  Mortality is a complication that is not trivial.  Pretty much any complication that can occur， aortic dissection is another， has occurred.  After all these are very high-risk patients to begin with.
