Dr Adams: Acute heart failure is really bedeviling us. There are over a million hospitalizations a year and we still see an increase in hospitalization. Heart failure advances as age advances so the aging of the population is driving up these decompensated cases. When you look at outcomes in the hospital and during follow-up, it is very poor in this sub-group of patients. In fact, it is one of the reasons why we are interested in biomarker guided therapy as this population has proven so difficult to treat.
